How they turn the Sea into paste
It all begins with an idea.
Considering the great cost of the slaughter of all living things in the sea you may wish to believe that something worthwhile is coming from it. But this is not true. Only fake things come from it - imitation crab and fish sandwiches with fish meat washed clean of the blood of all the things that died to bring it to you so cheap.
Everyone else pays the price for these cheap sandwiches and this cheap meat - our oceans stripped of their life, but the people who are really paying the price for this wanton destruction are the indigenous communities that have lived in harmony with these fish stocks for thousands of years.
Consider the video below. Consider all the seabirds, halibut, and king salmon, all the crustaceans - and even perhaps a marine mammal that died - consider the struggling and death of all the things it takes to create a trawl-caught fish sandwich. Imagine all of them in their living state and we know, intuitively, that turning all of that into paste in a factory is ethically and morally wrong - and it doesn’t even make financial sense.
The Cost of the Cruise
It all begins with an idea.
Cruise ships are small cities. Their pollution is an emerging threat to the sea. Some states, like the State of Alaska allow unprecedented levels of pollution in food. This is an excellent article by Hakai Magazine. Hakai Magazine supports independent journalism with a focus on the coast.
The Cost of the Trawl
It all begins with an idea.
My children. Trawl fisheries are worldwide. They are the reason why Somali Fishermen took to piracy. In this article from British Columbia, Canada we learn that over 30,000 salmon were killed as bycatch. The article is from Strong Coast, a community organization.
Hail Mary Peltola, Full of Grace
It all begins with an idea.
Blessed art thou among politicians.
Our Mother the Sea calls all advocates, champions, and protectors to the cause of electing politicians who fight for the sea. Mary Peltola just introduced two bills to limit bottom trawling and regulate bycatch in Alaska. She is also up for re-election and her opponents support bottom trawling, even if it destroys Alaska. Read more here about Peltola’s legislation in this article from the Alaska Longline Fisherman’s Association.
